First, let me say I found this game both fun and addictive. Once I got immersed, several hours could fly by while I explored just one more section… I certainly believe it’s a bargain you shouldn’t miss if you at all enjoy this type of game.

Charles’ game really is a response to those folks (like me) who complain about how they don’t make ‘em like they used to, and those old games were fun, dangnabbit.

Why You Will Love Swords and Sorcery – Underworld
.
The Story
The Underworld story goes far beyond that of a rising demon. The story elements that gravitate around it will keep you surprised at every turn, and eager to take on the next challenge.
.

The Necromancer, 1st of the 6 bosses you will meet throughout your journey.
Underworld will challenge you with 6 bosses, a few more intermediate level bosses, quests, magical items to acquire… All the ingredients that support a story to make a memorable RPG experience.
The Combat Strategy
I chose the list of monsters format (as opposed to groups), because I found it offered more strategy depth. Spells can simultaneously affect two different kinds of monsters (given you’ve reached the level for multiple target spells), and each monster’s HP level comes into consideration when determining your next move.
This, combined with a wide variety of enemy strategies (summoning, charm, sleep, dragons breathing fire, silencing…) makes each new combat situation a challenge.
When was the last time you were on the edge of your seat, startled by an enemy that popped out of nowhere while you strove to map a newly discovered area, in search of a mystical item that would enable you to fulfill a quest?
My money’s on a game you played a long, long time ago.
Underworld is an 80s style party based adventure game, much like:
- Might and Magic – The Secret of the Inner Sanctum.
- Might and Magic – Gates to Another World.
- Wizardry.
- The Bard’s Tale.
- Dungeon Master.
- The Eye of the Beholder.
There are others, but the above are those I am familiar with – especially the first two (the combat system is much like theirs was).
If you have played one or more of the above games, you are already familiar with the basics:
- 3D perspective world view.
- Turn-based combat.
- 6 classes of adventurers with specific strengths, weaknesses, restrictions and attributes that collaborate to face many challenges and quests, and ultimately save the world from a great evil.
- Intricate turn-based combat. Each monster is a separate entity.
.

.
- 90 finely illustrated foes . Imagination works great, but it doesn’t hurt to give it a boost! The first monster in line is illustrated. Discovering them all is part of the fun!
- 40 spells for adventuring, combat and healing.
.

.
- Automapping and flagging so as to easily find your way back to an NPC and not miss anything on the way. Only squares that you have visited appear on the map. You can zoom out and select any map you have previously visited.

Dozens of hours of old school 3D perspective gameplay, a great story, suspense, all for $20, the price of a night out at the movies! Now how often does that happen?
